My lesson for the week: Life is fragile.
My three year old son was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor on October 13th.
My family is coping as well as we can. The future is uncertain, and scary.
This blog was never intended to catalog my personal life. That said, if I can find a way to make it therapeutic for me, I may write about this journey that we are going to make.
I wanted my friends and acquaintances in the blogosphere to know where I am.
Life is fragile.
Love is not.

I'm sorry to hear about your son. Words are inadequate for the important things.
Aw, Smak. I am really, really sorry to hear this. If you have to drop off of the face of the earth (from a blog standpoint) feel free to e-mail and let us know how you are doing. I will pray.
Rob
So very sorry. If there is anything I can do, please, let me know.
Sorry to hear about your son, Dr. Smak. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Feel free to share as much or a little as you're comfortable with.
I'm so so sorry Dr. Smak. I really hope that everything turns out okay.
I am so terribly sorry. Know that your readers are carrying you and your family in our hearts.
Sorry to hear about your son, be sure to share if you want to.
Regards Dr Shock
I'm so sorry to hear about your son! I only just started reading your blog yesterday, but from a new fan, best of luck. You and your family are in my thoughts. The unknown internet users are pulling for you.
So terribly sorry to hear this. If it helps to blog about it, know that you have everyones support. If you need privacy, we will support that too.
Love and strength to you and your family.
All my good thoughts are with you.
God bless you and your family.
Thoughts and prayers for you and your family.
Please know, Dr. Smak, that you and your family have truck loads of prayers going up for you all. You also have love, love and more love coming your way. And, it is not fragile.
Hello. I know you are probably unfamiliar with me. I am at present, a cancer survivor. My girlfriend went through something similar with her little man at the same time I had my fight. His was not as your son's case however. His was of the liver. It is a horrible whirlwind of events once the diagnosis comes. You barely have time to breath, and you are thrown into decision making, that even with training, will take you into a tail spin no one, but someone that has been there, can know. I would trade my life for your child's situation if it was at all possible. If I can ever be of any assistance to you, in any capacity, call on me. I will do the only thing I know to do for you, even though I do not know you personally, whether you believe or not...I will pray for you and for that child you love with all your heart. I too, am so sorry you are in this position. Chrysalis
I'm so terribly sorry to hear this. I will also keep you in my prayers.
Bad things should NEVER happen to small children. I hope with all my heart your son will come through this with a happy heart.
love to you all,
Rosy Tea
i'm so sorry to hear this. my thoughts and prayers are with you.
Breath-robbing news. Dang. My best wishes and thoughts to you and your family on your journey ahead.
Judy
Prayers ascending for your family, Dr. Smak.
Words fail to describe the feeling in the pit of my stomach as I read of your family's news. In this unusual virtual community you have many who are keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers.
Life just continues to prove that she is an uncompromising, malicious, sadistic witch. When I started reading your blog,The post was on the breastfeeding rates of your patients. I was struck by your thoughts and somehow it made me feel like a hero for breastfeeding as long as I did. If you can make a complete stranger feel so great, then I know you are doing the same thing for your son.
A thousand words of hope and courage to your strong family.
I am so very sorry. You'll be in our thoughts and prayers.
I am so sorry to hear that- our thoughts and prayers are with your family. My daughter had cancer 4 years ago, and it changed everything about our lives. Fortunately she is fine now, and I hope that your journey ends up the way that ours did.
Good luck to all of you. (If it's helpful, the absolute best supports that we found in terms of information were at http://listserv.acor.org/archives/) They have fantastic mailing lists for most diagnoses which are very helpful.
Best wishes.
There are no words for this. Thank you for sharing your pain and challenge--I am always better for being reminded to be grateful for every day my family and I are on this earth.
You have touched many with your wonderful blogging. We will understand the silence also, if it comes.
I'm so sorry, Dr. Smak. You'll be in my wife and I's thoughts and prayers as well.
Best wishes, doc, and hang in there.
Hurting for you - I think blogging will be therapeutic.
I've just started to read your blog. This entry is where I am going to stop today. I will be back again. We have something in common. Labor day weekend, 1996, my 3 year old daughter was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor. I tear up at the thought that you have gone down the same path as I. It pains me physically. My heart goes out to you.
